History of PUBG: Battlegrounds
Origins (2013–2016)
-
PUBG was created by Brendan Greene, an Irish game designer known online as PlayerUnknown. He was inspired by the Japanese movie Battle Royale and created battle royale mods for games such as ARMA 2 and ARMA 3.
-
His work attracted attention from South Korean game developer KRAFTON (then known through PUBG Corp. and Bluehole), which hired him to help build a standalone battle royale game.
-
Early Access and Explosive Growth (2017)
-
The game launched in Early Access on Steam in March 2017 under the name PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG).
-
Fun fact: The original PUBG map, Erangel, was named after the daughter of creator Brendan Greene.
